What Is a Christian Mentor?

A Christian mentor is a Jesus follower who walks alongside another person to help them grow in their relationship with Christ.

Mentoring can happen one-on-one or in a small group and often looks like sharing life together— listening, encouraging, praying, reading Scripture, and pointing one another back to Jesus.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Every mentoring relationship is unique because every mentor and mentee is unique. Some relationships may include Bible study or reading a specific book together, while others may focus more on conversation, prayer, and simply doing life side by side.

The most important place to start? Ask your mentee what they’re hoping for and what they need right now.

The heart of Christian mentoring is not perfection— it’s presence.

The goal is to help another believer:

  • Grow in spiritual maturity

  • Experience the fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit

  • Learn to see Truth clearly

  • Live in freedom and victory

  • Know Jesus more deeply

Sometimes mentoring begins simply by listening and being someone who genuinely cares.

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” ~1 Thessalonians 5:11

Many people hesitate to mentor because they feel unqualified or inadequate. But mentoring is far more about character than experience or Bible knowledge.

The Bible gives us a clear picture of what spiritual growth looks like:

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22)

None of us are perfect. But when our hearts are turned toward Jesus and we desire to become more like Him, these qualities grow in us over time.

If the Holy Spirit lives within you, you already have something powerful to offer. God equips you not by your strengths alone, but by His Spirit working through you.

What to Expect as a Mentor

Being a mentor does not mean:

  • Having all the answers

  • Knowing the entire Bible

  • Being spiritually “put together”

  • Having a certain personality

It does mean:

  • Having a willing heart

  • Being committed to your own walk with Jesus

  • Being open, honest, and teachable

  • Sharing what God has done—and is still doing—in your life

Your story matters. God has given you a new life and a new story, not just for you— but to share with others.

The commitment you’ll make

  • Each term is for 9 months and runs from September – May

  • You agree to make contact once a week, i.e., email, calls, card, etc.

  • You agree to meet at a minimum once a month  (we highly recommend you meet weekly)

  • Time together can vary from a Bible study, fun activities, or shared interest etc.

  • You agree to pray for your Mentor/Mentee regularly

Mentors are encouraged to:

  • Spend regular time in God’s Word and prayer

  • Stay dependent on the Holy Spirit for guidance

  • Be willing to listen—a lot

  • Model simple spiritual practices like prayer and Bible reading

  • Be consistent and trustworthy

Mentoring isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about showing up, being present, and trusting God to work through you—one step at a time.

If you’re unsure where to begin, start with prayer. God is faithful to guide you.
